Travel Cagayan - Under scrutiny of untrained eyes (2004)

Travel Cagayan

“Travel Cagayan” featured the natural beauty of my home province Cagayan as a tourist destination. The web application, under the scrutiny of untrained eyes, lost in our second inter-school Web development competition.

Yep! That’s right, we lost. We lost to a pretty useless entry that had lots of eye candy graphics, but with not a single little functionality. The details are sketchy to me now, however, I do know that the contest was for the provincial day “Aggao ng Cagayan” to promote tourism industry within the province. The judges were incompetent not IT people. They we’re just provincial or city officials I guess but I’m sure they were biased didn’t know jack when to came to websites. Now, I’m not gonna mention what school won because that would take attention away from the application itself and mentioning it would actually give more recognition they don’t deserve.

Well, what I can remember was that we were given two weeks notice and that the team still consisted of Kuya Bryan, Ate Che, Ate Rose, Kuya Kelvin and me. Kuya Bryan and I had a bit of a disagreement (i.e. gave him the silent treatment) prior to the start of development but I made Kuya Bryan cry was resolved a few days before the deadline.1 Anyways, we did finish in time for the competition.

The web application was written in ASP and VBScript and developed under Macromedia Dreamweaver. I don’t know how much of the programming I did myself but I guess I helped somehow. :D It had a guest book, articles, a dynamic trivia sidebar widget and membership. Kuya Bry did the design entirely, including the flash banner, using Macromedia Flash MX, and homepage slide show. He used Adobe Photoshop 7.0 to create the graphic. Last, the application had a Microsoft Office Access backend dabatase.

Like “Kabataan Online,” this site was never put into service, the obvious reason being we lost. The reason why we lost can be put onto a number of things. Some of which may be because I refused to work early in the development, or the judges didn’t see the value in a dynamic website or we underestimated how much appearance influences the perceived value of an object. Whichever reason it may be, I still think we should have won but nothing’s gonna change the past so let’s leave it at that. :D I think I speak for team when I say we are proud of our work.

  1. That’s how stubborn I get sometimes. :P []
