Fire just freakin’ behind our apartment

Bago Bantay Fire
Bago Bantay, Quezon City.

A huge fire crept to about 10 meters from our apartment today. I didn’t experience it personally but my roommate did. He was sleeping while the fire broke out. The sounds of sirens from the fire fighter’s truck as they arrive woke him up.

He says that a concrete wall 10 inches thick protected our compound. And if the fire wasn’t stopped early enough, it would have went around the firewall and included our place on its death list. Anyways, thank God it didn’t happen that way.

All in all, ABS-CBN reports that 300 houses were destroyed and 150 families displaced, though I question its accuracy. Nobody got hurt or killed, however, it’s an estimated 1.8 million pesos worth of damage.

The cause of the fire? Faulty or overloaded electrical wiring is the talk of the people here but it IS still under investigation. Ground zero was majority a squatter’s area and the use of jumpers to get free electricity was prevalent. Whether or not it was electricity that caused the fire, please think before you send monkeys to get your house connected to the local power grid. Don’t wait for this to happen to your neighborhood.

Our prayers go to families who lost their homes and livelihoods to the blaze. God help them.
